Synchronicity ...the curious way dates weave themselves through a family

Today, October 23, is my grandson's 22nd birthday. It is a day of happiness, celebration, and gratitude.

But October 23 has another meaning in my family. It is the anniversary of the day my little brother Dicky died. He was only four years old.

Dicky died before I was born, so I never knew him. And yet, in a strange way, I grew up with him.

His picture hung on our living room wall. I knew his face, although I never heard his voice. I knew he was loved, although I never saw him held in my parents' arms. And I knew, from the tears that filled their eyes whenever they spoke his name, that his absence was something they carried all their lives.

October 23 must have been the saddest day in my parents' lives.

And then, many years later, on that very same date, my grandson was born.

Suddenly, October 23 became a day of joy for me. A date that had once brought unimaginable sorrow to my family now brought the wonderful gift of a new life.

But there is another part to this story.

My little brother Dicky was born on February 26.

My sister had a son named Jack. Tragically, Jack died unexpectedly at just 21 years old.

The date of his death?

February 26.

The very day our little brother Dicky had been born.

Two dates. October 23 and February 26.

One marked the death of a little boy and, decades later, the birth of my grandson.

The other marked the birth of that same little boy and, years later, the death of my sister's beloved son.

What are the odds?

Carl Jung used the word synchronicity to describe coincidences that seem to carry a special meaning, even when there is no apparent connection between the events.

I cannot explain these dates. I don't know whether they are simply remarkable coincidences or something more.

But I do know that dates are more than numbers on a calendar. They hold memories, love, grief, and sometimes unexpected joy.

My parents never had the opportunity to know my grandson. My little brother Dicky never had the chance to grow up. And my nephew Jack's life ended far too soon.

Yet somehow, across the generations, their stories are connected by two little squares on a calendar.

October 23. February 26.

Perhaps synchronicity is simply coincidence.

Or perhaps it is one of life's quiet reminders that the people we love remain woven into our family story, long after they are gone.

Do you have a story??
